Biopsies Of Intraoral Lesions

When we notice any unusual lumps, bumps or discolorations in the mouth or lips, we become concerned. These lesions can be benign or malignant. The only way we can determine the nature of these lesions is through a biopsy.

We can either do a brush biopsy or surgically remove a small piece of tissue from the lesion. We then ship it to the oral pathology department of the University Of Maryland Dental School. An oral pathologist will examine the tissue under the microscope and identify exactly what the lesion is. In this manner we can be absolutely sure if this unusual growth is benign or malignant.

Pictured below you will find areas that Dr. Trail has biopsied.
